One minute. Follow the line around the box.

seconds, that's all

In 4 · hold 4 · out 4 · hold 4

When this helps

  • Before something you're dreading — an exam, a call, a conversation.
  • When your chest is tight and your breathing has gone shallow.
  • Awake at 3 a.m. with a body that thinks something is happening.
If holding your breath feels bad — and mid-panic it often does — press Skip the holds. You'll breathe in for four and out for six instead. The longer out-breath is the part research points to as doing most of the work, so you lose very little.

Doing it without this page

  1. Breathe in through your nose, count to four.
  2. Hold gently for four. Never strain.
  3. Breathe out through your mouth for four.
  4. Hold for four. Repeat four times — that's a minute.

Questions

What is box breathing?
Box breathing is a paced pattern with four equal parts: breathe in for four seconds, hold for four, breathe out for four, hold for four. The even rhythm is the point — it gives your attention something steady to follow and slows your breathing rate without you having to think about it.
How long does box breathing take to work?
Most people notice something within about a minute, which is why this timer runs for one. A single round will not erase how you feel, but slowing your breathing is one of the few things you can change on purpose when very little else feels changeable.
Is box breathing better than other breathing exercises?
It is not better, just easier to follow, because every part is the same length. If holding your breath feels uncomfortable — and it often does when you are already anxious — the no-hold option on this page uses a longer out-breath instead, which research suggests is the part doing most of the work.
Can I do box breathing during a panic attack?
Some people find it helps; others find breath-holding makes panic worse. If you are mid-panic, try the no-hold option first — breathe in for four, out for six, no pausing. And if panic is a regular feature of your life, that is worth talking to a doctor about, not managing alone with a timer.

If that didn't land

Sometimes a minute of breathing is not the thing, and that is not a failure of yours. A body far enough into alarm needs a signal it can feel before it can follow an instruction. What is going on underneath:
