The project is done. So why does it feel like grief?
You finished the thing. The project, the job, the chapter, the season of life. By any reasonable measure, you should feel relief. Maybe even proud.
Instead there's this hollow weight. A low-grade grief that you can't quite justify. You tell yourself it's just tiredness, or anxiety about what's next. You wait for it to pass. It doesn't, really.
If you're neurodivergent, ADHD, autistic, or both, you've probably been handed one of two explanations. Either you're "scared of change" (the pop-psychology version), or you have trouble "task-switching" (the clinical version). Both are partially true. Neither explains the feeling.
The feeling isn't about what's ahead. It's about the moment of ending itself.
When the dopamine signal stops, your body experiences it as loss.
Most people experience endings as emotionally bittersweet but cognitively neutral. The brain wraps up, files the memory, moves on. For a neurodivergent brain, that wrap-up phase carries a measurable cost.
Task completion, for a brain with ADHD, is a reward-signal drop. The engagement that kept the dopamine system running, the novelty, the momentum, the microhits of progress, end at the moment of completion. Because the ADHD reward circuit runs on lower baseline availability to begin with, that drop lands harder.
In 2009, Volkow and colleagues used PET imaging to measure dopamine receptor availability directly in adults with ADHD. They found significantly reduced D2/D3 receptor availability in the reward circuits, the same circuits that process the feeling of meaningful completion. Less receptor availability means the signal that says that mattered, you can let go now simply doesn't fire with the same force. The ending doesn't feel resolved. It feels like something has been taken.
A related mechanism compounds this. Tripp and Wickens (2008) identified what they called the dopamine transfer deficit: in ADHD, the anticipatory dopamine firing that normally helps bridge the gap between completing one thing and beginning the next is diminished. The brain doesn't pre-load reward for what's coming. You're left in the ending without the neurological bridge to the next beginning.
This is the transition tax. Not fear of the unknown. Not a character flaw. A structural gap in the reward circuit, paid at the moment of closure.
The forward-looking advice doesn't work here.
Neurotypical counsel for hard endings assumes you have full access to anticipatory reward: Think about what's coming. Focus on the possibilities. Close the loop and start fresh. This works when your dopamine system responds to those signals. For many neurodivergent adults, it doesn't, or not reliably.
What your nervous system actually needs is something to hold. Not metaphorically. Physically.
There's a body of research on transitional and comfort objects that doesn't get taken seriously enough in adult mental health conversations. The short version: a comfort object provides sensory input that activates the body's regulation pathways, touch, weight, texture. It gives the nervous system something to register as present when the previous source of engagement has ended. It doesn't replace the dopamine that just dropped. It offers a different signal: safe, still, okay.
This is why the transition tax often manifests in the body. Tight chest, restlessness, an inability to settle. The Sunday dread that arrives before the week begins is one version: the ending of the weekend is a loss event before the new week has a chance to become familiar. After the overstimulating day, when stimulation ends and the nervous system doesn't know what to do with the silence, that's another.
What actually works in a comfort object
Not every soft thing helps. The neurodivergent nervous system is specific.
Weight and resistance. Something that pushes back slightly when you hold it. The proprioceptive input, pressure on the hands, signals the body to settle. Limp or overly light objects don't provide this.
Consistent texture. A surface your hands can stay on without being surprised. For sensory-sensitive people, unexpected texture changes are their own small disruptions.
Neutral scent. Strong or synthetic scents can become their own source of overwhelm, especially mid-transition when the system is already dysregulated.
Size that fits in one arm. You want to hold it while doing other things, sitting at a desk, lying down, moving between rooms. It should fit into the in-between, not require a dedicated moment.
Something that doesn't demand engagement. Not a fidget toy with parts to move. Not something with buttons. A passive object that simply exists in your hands, lets your nervous system downregulate rather than switch tasks again.
No judgment attached. If part of you thinks you shouldn't need it, you won't use it. Look for something that doesn't require you to explain or defend it.

FAQ
Why do endings feel worse for me than for other people, even endings I wanted?
Because wanting a transition and your nervous system tolerating the moment of closure are two separate things. The emotional logic and the neurological response operate independently. You can be glad the job ended and still feel the reward-circuit drop when it does. Both are true at once.
Is this only an ADHD thing, or does autism play a role too?
Both. ADHD brings the dopamine reward-circuit component described above. Autistic neurology adds a different layer: transitions often disrupt established routines and sensory environments, which function as regulatory anchors. The mechanism is different; the result, transition as a loss event, is similar.
I feel grief after finishing things I love, like a book or a TV series. Is this related?
Yes, and it's more common among neurodivergent people than the general conversation acknowledges. Hyperfocus creates a deep dopamine groove. Finishing the thing ends the groove. "Post-series depression" isn't just attachment to characters, it's the ending of a reliable reward state.
What actually helps in the moment, when the transition has already happened and I'm in it?
Sensory grounding first: something to hold, something warm, physical presence in the body. Then low-demand routine, not productivity, but rhythm. A familiar walk, a known playlist, a consistent small ritual. The goal is to give the nervous system a new groove to settle into, without demanding it feel better faster than it can.
Should I talk to someone about this?
If the difficulty with endings is disrupting your life, relationships, work, your ability to start new things, then yes, a therapist familiar with ADHD or neurodivergent adults is worth finding.
