Stimming Is Not a Problem to Solve

Stimming, repetitive movement, sound, or sensation-seeking, is not a symptom to eliminate. It is a functional self-regulation tool that the nervous system reaches for when it needs to process emotion, manage sensory load, or communicate. When suppressed, the underlying physiological need remains completely unmet. The stim disappears; the distress does not.


The built-in pressure valve

Stimming is any repetitive, self-generated movement, sound, or sensory input: rocking, finger-tapping, humming, skin-picking, hair-twisting, pacing. The body uses it to regulate its own arousal level.

The American Psychiatric Association lists repetitive behaviours as a core feature of autism, but the fuller truth is that everyone stims. Non-autistic adults tap pens, bounce legs, twirl hair. The difference, for autistic and many other neurodivergent people, is one of frequency, variety, and weight. When your sensory system is running hotter than the environment was designed for, stimming isn't a quirk. It's infrastructure.

Morris et al.'s (2025) survey of autistic adults found stimming across a full range of emotional states: 50% when anxious, 39% when frustrated, 37% when excited, and 33% when angry. That spread matters. Stimming isn't just a panic response. It is the body's general-purpose emotional translator, active across both difficult and positive states.


What suppression actually costs

Suppression removes the regulatory behaviour without touching the regulatory need. The cost is striking.

In Morris et al.'s paired surveys of 131 and then 117 autistic adults, stimming was reported as a negative experience only when it was self-injurious or stigmatised. Despite being predominantly positive, participants deliberately suppressed it. Almost exclusively for extrinsic reasons: to avoid judgment.

Read that again. The behaviour was working. They suppressed it anyway, because of the room.

A 2021 study of 340 adults confirmed stimming as a self-regulatory mechanism covering both emotional expression and cognitive distraction, and found that social pressure to suppress it produced measurable negative effects on emotion and cognition.

Higher masking is associated with increased depression and anxiety, emotional exhaustion, burnout, lower self-esteem, and a reduced sense of living authentically. Many autistic adults are caught between the social demand to mask and the physical discomfort of doing so.

Not the stim. The hiding of it. That is the actual cost.


The impossible instruction

The impulse to stim is not a decision. It is a signal from the nervous system that the current level of input or arousal needs adjusting. Constant self-monitoring to suppress stims only increases the underlying need to self-regulate, creating a cycle where anxiety drives suppression, and suppression amplifies anxiety.

If you spent years redirecting your stims into something more socially acceptable, channelling leg-bouncing into "just being someone who exercises a lot," turning the need to rock into perpetually keeping yourself busy, that took cognitive resources. Every redirect was a small tax on your attention. Every day a minor negotiation with your own body.

The nervous system doesn't care whether the reason you stopped is shame or strategy. It still isn't getting what it needs.

Four things people get wrong about stimming

"Stimming means you're not coping."

The opposite is closer to true. Sensory sensitivity creates negative physical, emotional, and cognitive effects. Stimming is the self-regulatory mechanism that addresses them. Stimming is coping. Suppression is what removes the coping mechanism.

"If you've learned to hide it, you must not need it as much."

The underlying need doesn't go away. The expression just gets reshaped by social expectations. Someone who flapped their hands as a child and "grew out of it" likely redirected rather than resolved the sensory need. The redirect is still a tax.

"Other people stim too, so it's not a real thing."

That's true, and it actually supports the point: the nervous system reaching for repetitive input is not pathological. It is normal biology. The difference is that for autistic and many neurodivergent people, the need is more persistent and more functionally essential, not because something is broken, but because the sensory environment was never designed for this nervous system.

"Stimming is about autism specifically."

Morris and colleagues found that autistic adults stim for reasons including emotional expression, identity, and connection with other autistic people. Stimming is not merely a symptom cluster. For many people, it is a form of communication, a marker of belonging, and a way of being present in the body.


Permission, not elimination

For people re-learning to let the body do what it needs, having something to hold, squeeze, or fidget with provides a low-stakes on-ramp. Adults who find ways to stim that feel comfortable, through discreet tools or supportive environments, report better emotional wellbeing than those who try to eliminate the behaviours entirely.

FAQ

Is stimming a sign of anxiety, or does it cause anxiety?

Neither, exactly. Stimming is a response to arousal, which may include anxiety, excitement, or sensory overload. Suppressing it doesn't reduce the underlying anxiety; it removes one of your tools for managing it. The anxiety was already there. The stim was helping.

Can adults stim even if they don't have an autism diagnosis?

Yes. Stimming is not exclusive to autism. Many neurodivergent people, including those with ADHD, sensory processing differences, or anxiety, stim regularly. The behaviour is the nervous system doing what it needs to do, regardless of diagnostic label.

What happens to the body when you suppress a stim?

The sensory or emotional need the stim was addressing remains unmet. Over time, chronic suppression is linked to increased anxiety, emotional exhaustion, burnout, and reduced self-esteem, separate from whatever the original stressor was.

Is it possible to stim in ways that are less disruptive without suppressing the need?

Yes. Redirecting a stim toward a different sensory channel, something tactile, pressured, or rhythmic, can meet the underlying need while fitting more comfortably into a given context. The goal is meeting the need, not eliminating the behaviour.

Why do so many adults not realise they've been suppressing their stims?

Because suppression often starts young, before it's conscious. Many autistic adults describe stimming freely as children, then gradually learning to redirect or hide the behaviour through peer pressure, correction, or social mirroring, without ever being told explicitly to stop. By adulthood, the suppression has become automatic, which makes it nearly invisible.
