Parallel Play for Adults: Why Presence Is Enough

Quieter Than Alone

You're at a café, or a library, or sitting near someone watching their own screen on the other end of the sofa. Nobody is talking. Nothing is shared. And yet something in you is quieter than it was when you were alone.

You probably dismissed that.

Most people do. The mind has a way of disqualifying feelings it can't explain socially, it's just background noise, it doesn't count, you weren't actually connecting. But the body logged something real. And there is now peer-reviewed evidence that says your body was right.


The Physics of Sitting Near Someone

Developmental psychologists use the term "parallel play" to describe a stage in early childhood: two children playing side by side, absorbed in their own activities, not interacting, but not separate either. They're in each other's orbit. That proximity had its own developmental value, distinct from cooperative play, distinct from solitary play.

Adults do this constantly. Two people reading in the same room. Study partners sitting in silence. Friends working at the same kitchen table. A couple on separate devices, technically alone, technically together.

What neuroscience has now shown is not why we say it matters, but why the nervous system registers it. Why its absence, on a long run of solitary days, accumulates into a specific kind of fatigue. The answer is physiological, not sentimental.


What the Body Knows in Silence

In 2015, Yulia Golland and colleagues at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya ran a precise test. Pairs of participants watched emotionally evocative films seated side by side. No conversation. No interaction. No shared task. Just proximity and a shared experience.

They measured the autonomic signals: heart rate, skin conductance, the read-outs of an activated or calming nervous system. The results showed synchronization between co-present participants, and the degree of that synchronization tracked the degree to which their emotional responses converged. Two strangers, not speaking, not touching, not making eye contact, were quietly coupling in their nervous systems.

The autonomic nervous system governs heart rate, breath rate, digestion, the arc of a stress response and its recovery. When two people's autonomic signals fall into rhythm, something real is being shared, something that precedes words, precedes awareness.

The same research group extended this in 2019. In a follow-up study measuring facial muscle activity, specifically the zygomatic muscle that governs genuine smiling, pairs of strangers watching films together showed synchrony in their facial responses, even without looking at each other. The synchrony was specific to each pair. These two bodies, in proximity, had found each other's rhythm.

Further work showed that strangers in a shared task went into autonomic synchrony regardless of whether they were talking. The body does not wait for permission.


Why the Wanting Feels Wrong

Here is where most people get stuck.

They want company. They don't want to talk, don't want to perform wellbeing, don't want to explain themselves. Those two things feel contradictory, so the wanting becomes something to manage rather than something to meet. Guilt attaches itself. The sense that craving presence without conversation is somehow immature, or unfair to the other person, or avoidance rather than a legitimate need.

It isn't. What the research above describes is a mechanism, not a metaphor. Proximity triggers physiological co-regulation. That's not a personality quirk, it's biology. The desire to be near someone without the overhead of interaction is not avoidance. It is the nervous system asking for something it is built to receive.

This matters especially for people who live with anxiety. The cognitive load of social interaction is enormous: reading tone, managing impression, tracking the conversation. That load is its own kind of stress signal. Parallel presence offers what full interaction does not, the physiological benefit of togetherness without the performance cost.


What Actually Works (And Doesn't)

"It only counts if we talked." The Golland study was specifically designed to test the absence of direct interaction. The synchrony was produced by proximity alone.

"You need to be with someone you know." The zygomatic synchrony study used strangers. Not friends, not partners. Two people who had never met. The nervous system does not require familiarity as a prerequisite.

"Feeling better afterward is placebo." Placebo implies no mechanism. There is a mechanism: autonomic co-regulation. The shift you feel after a quiet afternoon in a coffee shop, or working next to a friend, has a measurable physiological correlate.

"This means I should force myself into social situations." No. Co-presence is not the same as social performance. Crowded, loud, demanding environments activate the sympathetic nervous system, the opposite of regulation. What the evidence points toward is low-stakes, low-demand proximity: being near, not being on.


When You're Alone

Some people don't have easy access to this. They live alone. They work remotely. They are new to a city, or recovering from something, or in a season of life where everyone is elsewhere.

What can help, at the edges, is what attachment researchers call a transitional object, something with physical presence and tactile weight that the nervous system can partly register as company. It isn't the same as a person. But the body's threat-detection systems are somewhat responsive to soft physical contact and something to hold, and in the gap between needing co-presence and having it, that can matter.

How It Actually Lives

There is no right way. Some people find it in cafés. Some in libraries, or gyms, or on a call where nobody needs to talk much. Some build it deliberately, working from a friend's place, reading in the same room as a partner, making a standing habit of proximity without agenda.

If you carry more than you show, and the social overhead of interaction feels heavy, this is worth taking seriously. Not as a cure. Not as a substitute for things that need more than a quiet afternoon. But as a legitimate use of what your nervous system already knows how to do.

You don't have to perform connection for it to count.

The term comes from developmental psychology, where it describes children playing near each other without interacting, a distinct, valued stage of social development. In adults, the mechanics are the same: proximity without direct interaction. The underlying biology is also the same. The nervous system doesn't outgrow the need for co-regulation through presence.

Do you need to be in the same room, or does video call proximity count?

The strongest evidence is for physical co-presence. The 2015 Golland study measured in-person pairs, and the synchrony effects rely partly on shared ambient signals, temperature, sound, subtle movement, that screens don't fully replicate. Remote presence appears to offer some regulatory benefit; it's a matter of degree, not kind.

Why do I feel guilty for wanting company without conversation?

We've absorbed a cultural script that equates connection with communication. Physiological co-regulation doesn't require speech. Wanting to be near someone without the overhead of interaction is not immature or avoidant, it's the nervous system recognizing what it needs. The guilt is a cognitive story laid over a biological reality.

Is this relevant to people with anxiety specifically?

Yes. Anxiety involves a dysregulated autonomic nervous system, specifically heightened sympathetic activation, the stress branch. Co-presence, when it's low-demand and low-pressure, supports the parasympathetic nervous system, the branch responsible for calming. Full social interaction carries cognitive and performance loads that can themselves be activating. Parallel presence offers some of the regulatory benefit without that overhead.

What if I mostly live alone and can't access this easily?

That's the honest hard part, and there's no complete workaround. Building small habits of low-stakes proximity, cafés, libraries, community spaces, can help. Physical comfort objects offer a partial signal to the nervous system in the interim. Knowing that the need is real, that it has a mechanism and isn't weakness, is itself something. You're not making it up. The body knows what it's asking for.
