Your Nervous System Isn't Dramatic. It's Just Honest.

The Thing People Keep Getting Wrong About You

Someone once told you that you were "too sensitive." Maybe a teacher. A parent. A partner who said it gently, like a diagnosis. And somewhere along the way, you started believing them, started treating your nervous system like a faulty appliance that fires when it shouldn't.

Here's the problem with that story: it's not true.

Your nervous system is not dramatic. It is not broken, miscalibrated, or stuck in some permanent overreaction. It is doing exactly what it learned to do, reading the environment, logging the data, and responding to patterns it has seen before. The fact that this process feels louder for you than it apparently does for other people is not a character flaw. It is a measurable neurobiological difference.

That distinction matters more than most people realise.


A System Built to Detect, Not to Perform

The nervous system's primary job is threat detection. It is not a mood regulator. It is not a personality filter. It is a signal-detection system that has been shaped, over years, by everything you've experienced, every reprimand, every social rejection, every moment you felt too much in a room where everyone else seemed fine.

Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS), a temperamental trait first described by Aron and colleagues, involves heightened sensitivity to internal and external stimuli and a tendency to process information more deeply. It is associated with increased sensitivity to emotions, pain, environmental stimuli, and aesthetic experiences. It is not a disorder. It is estimated that SPS is present in roughly 15 to 20% of the general population. That is one in five people whose nervous systems are, by design, turned up higher.

For neurodivergent people, the picture goes deeper. Atypical sensory processing is a common clinical observation in autism spectrum disorder, and neural hyperexcitability has been proposed as the underlying mechanism for sensory hypersensitivity. In a 2016 neurophysiological study, researchers measured visual evoked responses in autistic and neurotypical participants and found something striking: the magnitude of evoked sensory responses increased at a significantly greater rate in the autistic group, with approximately 45% of those participants showing rates of neural response greater than any neurotypical participant in the study. Greater, not imagined. Measurable, not performed.

This is not a metaphor. The sensory cortex of a sensitive nervous system is working harder, taking in more, processing more. When you feel overwhelmed by something other people shrug off, that is accurate data reporting. It just happens to be data that the world has spent decades telling you to distrust.


What Repeated Invalidation Does to a Nervous System

There is a specific kind of exhaustion that comes from being told, over and over, that your reactions are too big.

It is not just emotional. It is somatic. It lives in the jaw, the chest, the way you hold yourself slightly braced in public.

In a 2023 qualitative study, Ginapp and colleagues asked young adults with ADHD to describe their own experience of the condition in their own words, and what emerged was not primarily a story about attention. Most participants reported that the diagnostic criteria did not accurately capture their experiences with ADHD, and about 77% described struggling with Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD), a feature not included in the DSM-5 criteria at all.

The critical difference between general rejection sensitivity and RSD is the addition of dysphoria, from the ancient Greek meaning "unbearable distress."

Participants in that study described RSD episodes involving rumination, self-blame, somatic distress, and an inability to let go, even when they understood their reaction was out of proportion to the event. That last part is worth sitting with. They knew it was disproportionate. They could not stop it anyway. That is not drama. That is a nervous system that has been conditioned, through repeated social invalidation, to register certain signals as genuinely dangerous.

RSD is also distinctive in its time course: where most emotional distress builds gradually, RSD typically onsets within seconds of the triggering perception, peaks rapidly, and can last for hours.

Seconds to peak. Hours to recover. And the world's response to this has mostly been: calm down.


What the "Dysregulation" Framing Misses

Most of what you'll find written about nervous system sensitivity frames it as a regulation problem. Something to fix, manage, or override. Breathing exercises. Vagal tone. A checklist of symptoms to track.

None of that is wrong, exactly. But it starts from the wrong place.

It starts from the assumption that your nervous system is misfiring, when the more accurate reading is that it learned, in a specific environment, to be exactly this sensitive. Research on RSD consistently finds that participants either explicitly referenced trauma as the reason for their current experiences, or provided examples showing that prolonged interpersonal experiences led to the learned response evident in RSD. The sensitivity is not random noise. It is a logical output from years of input.

People with both ADHD and high sensory processing sensitivity can experience overstimulation, strong emotional reactivity, and difficulty with emotion regulation, but overstimulation in a system that processes more is not the same as overstimulation in a system that processes normally. Offering the same regulation tips to both, without acknowledging that difference, is like telling someone with acute hearing to just ignore the fire alarm.

The reframe that actually helps is not "how do I calm this down" but "what is this actually telling me, and is the environment asking too much?"

Four Things People Get Wrong

"Sensitive people are just anxious." Sensitivity and anxiety are related, but they are not the same thing. A sensitive nervous system processes more data. Anxiety is one possible response to that data overload. You can be highly sensitive without being diagnosably anxious, and you can have an anxiety disorder without being especially sensitive to sensory input. Conflating them leads to treatment plans that miss the point.

"If you understood why you react this way, you'd react less." This is the insight trap. Knowing why your nervous system does something does not change the underlying neurology. The adults in the Ginapp et al. study understood their reactions were disproportionate. They still could not stop them in the moment. Insight is valuable. It is not a cure.

"Sensitivity is a gift if you reframe it." Sometimes. But this framing, delivered to someone who is exhausted and hurting, can feel like being told to be grateful for a broken arm because it makes you more empathetic. The neurobiology is neutral. Whether it feels like a gift depends heavily on whether you've had support and space to work with it. Not everyone has.

"You just need better coping strategies." Coping strategies help at the level of response. They don't change the signal. A sensitive nervous system that has been chronically invalidated needs more than a breathing exercise, it needs consistent experiences of safety, predictability, and being met without judgment. That is a different project.


The Place for Comfort Objects in All of This

There is something important about objects in the literature on nervous system regulation: tactile input, particularly soft and predictable touch, activates the same calming pathways that social connection does. It does not require explanation or performance. It does not need you to be okay first.
