The Energy Budget: How to Spend a Day When You Run Differently

You tracked your spoons. You still crashed.

It's 2 p.m. You've done nothing objectively hard. A couple of meetings, some emails, lunch out with a colleague. By any external count, you have energy left. But something is gone, a specific something, and you can't explain it in a way that doesn't sound like an excuse.

The problem isn't that you miscounted. It's that you were counting the wrong thing.


One pool vs. five accounts

Most energy-management frameworks, spoon theory, traffic-light systems, battery-percentage trackers, treat your daily capacity as a single quantity to allocate. That framing is useful as a starting point. But for neurodivergent people, it misses the actual structure of what's happening.

The crash you're trying to explain isn't from one depleted pool. It's from at least five distinct sub-budgets that draw from separate neurological resources, deplete at different rates, and require different kinds of recovery. You can be genuinely fine on two of them and already bankrupt on the other three.

Those five are:

Sensory processing cost. The effort of filtering, tolerating, or compensating for an environment your nervous system registers differently. The hum of fluorescent lights. The fabric of certain clothes. A busy café that everyone else calls "nice." This cost runs continuously and invisibly.

Cognitive load overhead. The baseline tax neurodivergent brains pay to process information, hold working-memory chains open, and manage executive function, even during tasks that appear simple. In a 2024 scoping review by Le Cunff et al. examining neurophysiological correlates across ADHD, ASD, and dyslexia, neuroimaging and EEG data consistently pointed to elevated cognitive load during standard tasks, not because the tasks are objectively harder, but because the processing architecture is structurally different. The work is real even when it doesn't show.

Social interpretation effort. Consciously decoding what neurotypical interaction performs automatically for others: tone, subtext, facial expression, unspoken expectation. Every social exchange carries a processing fee that doesn't appear on the invoice.

Emotional regulation labor. The effort of managing an emotional system that often activates faster, more intensely, or in ways that are harder to modulate. Not overreacting, doing more active work to regulate a nervous system that needs more active management.

Masking tax. The cost of suppressing natural expression, stims, communication style, or sensory responses to appear more neurotypical. Masking burnout occurs when the neurological cost of this chronic suppression exceeds the person's capacity to recover, it can look exactly like depression while having a completely different cause. Success is often the mask's most convincing feature, which is why it goes unrecognized longest.


Why the pool feels small but the problem is more specific

Framing this as "a smaller pool" is half-right. Your total daily budget may well be lower than a neurotypical person's in a given environment. But the more important insight is that the pool isn't even the right metaphor. The accounts are separate. A day spent entirely at a loud sensory event leaves your cognitive and social budgets relatively intact but your sensory account at zero. The next morning you may feel confused about why you can't think, but your cognitive load account was fine until it had to pick up the slack.

Sensory, social, and cognitive fatigue describe distinct forms of exhaustion that come from sustained effort rather than physical activity. They stack. They bleed into each other. And when one account runs dry, the others start compensating, which is why you feel globally wrecked when only one system failed.

The diagnostic question isn't "how tired am I?" It's: which account specifically took the hit today?


Before you choose a comforting object: what actually helps

Asking which sub-budget is depleted matters because different deficits need different recovery inputs.

Sensory depletion calls for a genuinely low-input environment: reduced light, reduced noise, reduced texture demand, reduced social expectation. Not sleep necessarily, quiet.

Cognitive-load depletion calls for complete task cessation. Not "lighter tasks." Stopping. The brain that has been running elevated background processing for six hours doesn't recover by switching to slightly easier processing.

Social and masking depletion calls for unstructured, unmonitored time, ideally alone, or with someone around whom you don't have to perform. No conversation that requires effort. No face to read.

Emotional regulation depletion is where a lot of people get stuck, because the instinct is to talk through what happened. Often the nervous system needs to be soothed before it can process. This is where physical grounding, something to hold, something with weight or texture, something that requires no words, can do more, faster, than language.


What to look for in a comfort object when your system is depleted

Not every physical object is equally useful here. A few things to look for:

  • Texture that reads as safe to your specific nervous system. This is individual. Some people need soft and yielding; others need firm and weighted. Try before you commit.
  • Size that fits how you actually use it, held in hands, pressed against your chest, rested in your lap. Not displayed. Used.
  • No performance required. A comfort object is one of the only interactions in the day that asks nothing back. It doesn't need you to explain yourself.
  • Passivity of use. Recovery for neurodivergent nervous systems often works better through passive sensory input (holding, touching, applying gentle pressure) than through active strategies that require attention. The object should lower cognitive load, not add to it.
  • No embarrassment overhead. If you'll second-guess reaching for it, or hide it, or feel the need to justify it to yourself, the emotional overhead reduces its value. Pick something you can actually use.

Q: Is it normal for this to vary a lot day to day?

Yes, and that inconsistency is one of the most disorienting parts. The accounts don't reset identically each morning. Incomplete recovery from yesterday carries forward. Sleep quality, hormonal shifts, ambient stress, and whether you've had enough genuinely low-demand time all affect starting balance. A bad Wednesday isn't character, it's a carryover from Tuesday.

Q: Can I build a higher capacity over time?

Partially. Some sub-budgets expand with reduced environmental friction, better sensory accommodation, fewer masking demands, more practiced emotional regulation tools. But "building capacity" by pushing through depletion consistently has the opposite effect. The gains come from better conditions and genuine recovery, not from tolerating more.
